Bike sharing in Malaga: the alternatives after Dropbyke shutdown

Bike sharing or simply renting a bike or ebike in Malaga is probably the best way to get around this fabulous city in southern Spain, given its modest size and proximity to the sea.

Also, the large garden that separates the city from the port, the double promenade that stretches for a few kilometers from the center to playa del Pedregalejo (with lot of views and outdoor fitness areas), make renting a bike or bike sharing in Malaga the best way to get around.

I originally wrote this guide to describe how the Dropbyke bike-sharing service worked, its app, and its costs, which besides being cheap, was also quite convenient and functional. Unfortunately, the company closed down.

The saddest thing is that, at the moment, there are no other bike-sharing companies left in this Spanish city, so while we wait for another company to step up (if you find one, let us know in the comments! 🙂 ) below I’m suggesting some currently available alternatives for classic bicycle rental in Malaga.

How to rent a bike in Malaga

Here are some alternatives for renting a bike in Malaga at a good price:

  • If you want to explore the city or its surroundings for the day with a classic bicycle, this daily bike rental lets you get by for €10. Unfortunately, since these are commercial businesses and not bike sharing, “daily” rental doesn’t mean a full 24 hours, but rather their opening hours (usually between 10 AM and 7 PM, subject to change).
  • Another “daily” bike rental similar to the previous one;
  • If you’d rather cover more distance or put in less effort, you can also rent an electric bike for €30 for the day (again, meaning during the standard opening hours mentioned earlier);
  • For an experience that’s still electric but more fun than a bicycle, you can try this one-and-a-half-hour Segway tour starting from €30, where the guide will take you to see Gibralfaro castle and the port.

If, instead, you want to take a day trip to the beautiful city of Granada, which is too far to reach by bike, take a look at this organized trip:
