One of the many activities you can enjoy during a trip to Rhodes is definitely a kayak tour: trying a kayak in Rhodes in fact, in addition to being easy to do even for beginners, will allow you to discover some corners of the coast otherwise unreachable.
In this guide we’ll see why taking a kayak tour in Rhodes, some examples of what you can see along the eastern coast and finally how and where to book the activity!

How kayak tours in Rhodes work
Kayaking in Rhodes is basically done at sea, along the eastern coast, sheltered from the wind and characterized by very calm waters. The western coast, on the other hand, is constantly hit by the Meltemi wind, therefore unsuitable for kayaking but more interesting for those who practice surfing or sailing.
There are multiple guided kayak tours in Rhodes that you can choose from. Usually, they start from one of the many beaches of Rhodes, cover a few kilometers on the calm sea (which is sometimes as flat as a board), along the coast or entering small caves, then land on a new beach and, after a snack/lunch break, go back.
Our kayaking experience in Rhodes
To better understand what to expect from a kayak tour in Rhodes, I’ll tell you about the tour I personally took part in with some friends.
Once we booked the tour online and got in touch with the team, we arranged to provide the address of our accommodation for the shuttle that took us there and back (included in the price).
In the morning, around 8 if I remember correctly, we were picked up from our accommodation near the city of Rhodes and brought to Kathara Beach, the starting point of the tour.
There we met the other instructors (one was the one who picked us up) and after a few welcome minutes followed by some very simple stretching exercises, we were shown and explained how to handle the kayak, even for those who were experiencing it for the first time.
These were specifically two-seater kayaks (which you can see in the photo below, taken at the beach where we had a break) equipped with pedals to steer; we were about ten participants plus four instructors.
Once in the water and got familiar with the kayaks, we began paddling from Kathara Beach heading south, keeping the coast on our right.
We saw various coastal cliffs and reached as our first destination the famous Anthony Quinn’s Bay, kayaking up close to the shore.
As we continued, we followed more rocky walls, where silence reigned, one of which had a particular shape that I won’t spoil but you’ll discover, if you take part, when the instructors point it out. 🙂
We then passed in front of another area where there are some small caves. You can visit them by entering with the kayak, in groups of 2–3 kayaks at a time, due to the limited space.
The peculiarity of some of these caves is that inside, the seabed is much deeper compared to the surrounding sea. All these details will be explained by the instructors (in English, but easy to understand).

After another break to stop the kayaks and take a few dips into the sea, we continued the last stretch until we reached the beautiful Traganou Beach.
We stayed at Traganou Beach for a couple of hours: near the “landing point” there are other small caves between the beach and the sea, as well as some rocks for diving for those who like that, in the company of the instructors.
After diving, it was time for a packed lunch made up of various local specialities (brought and provided by the instructors, so you won’t need to bring anything, except water), in the shade of the caves.

After lunch we left Traganou Beach to return to the starting point at Kathara Beach, arriving around one hour later. At the end we were offered a drink of our choice at the beach bar, before being taken back to the accommodation.
How much does a kayak tour in Rhodes cost
A kayak tour in Rhodes, like the one just described, costs around 80 euros per person.
In this specific case, it was a 5-hour trip including the break, and the sea route is about 5 km one way (don’t worry, it’s not too hard even for beginners, thanks to the calm sea and two-seater kayaks).
There are other kayak tours in Rhodes that take place in different areas of the eastern coast, for example around the beautiful town of Lindos and its bays. Prices are also similar; I think it’s hard to find anything under 70–80 euros per person.
How to book the kayak tour
Once you’ve chosen your favourite tour, book it at least 2–3 days in advance if you can, to make sure the tour goes ahead and, if applicable, arrange with the instructors for the shuttle or meeting point, as well as what to bring.
To choose the best day, first check the weather or wind forecast with an app like Windfinder. The eastern coast is almost always sheltered from the wind, but it’s always best to make sure and choose a sunny day to fully enjoy the kayak and swimming.
