Fuerteventura beaches: complete guide and map

Welcome back to this guide on the best beaches of Fuerteventura, an island that, more than others, is characterized by being particularly barren and “desert-like.” So, what won’t be hard to find in Fuerteventura? Yes, exactly, the beaches!

Map of Fuerteventura’s beaches

Let’s start as usual with the map of the beaches, to better understand their location.

The yellow pins indicate Fuerteventura beaches that I strongly recommend in this guide;
The blue pins indicate medium or large urban areas where you could choose to stay, while the red pins indicate other areas for staying in really small and quiet villages.

And now, let’s begin!

Playa de Sotavento

Overall rating: 10/10
Services: Yes, at the far end by the watersports area.
Accessibility: Easy
Type of beach: Sandy with natural “pool”
Nearby accommodations: in Costa Calma, such as Apartamentos Morasol or Melia Fuerteventura.

Beaches of Fuerteventura - Playa de Sotavento
Playa de Sotavento with the low tide

In a guide that talks about the best beaches of Fuerteventura, how not to start with Playa de Sotavento. A magnificent beach on the southeast coast of the island, sheltered from the stronger waves and partially sheltered from the wind as well, whose peculiarity is that it changes shape depending on the tide.

Easy to reach by car, with a parking lot just a few meters away, it’s a perfect beach both for the view and for those who love quiet beaches with water that’s a bit less cold than elsewhere.

Playa de Sotavento is so beautiful that I talk about it in more detail in this dedicated article.

Caleta de Fuste

Overall rating: 7/10
Services: Yes, including restaurants just a few steps away.
Accessibility: Easy
Type of beach: Sandy bay-shaped
Nearby accommodations: in the Caleta de Fuste area, such as Bungalows Fuertesol or the complex Barceló Castillo Beach Resort.

Some activities you may like, before going on with the article:

Caleta de Fuste waterfront

Caleta de Fuste beach, a nearly touristy neighborhood on the east coast of the island of Fuerteventura, is a sandy beach that stretches across a semicircular bay.

Although it’s a fairly “classic” beach and not as unforgettable as others, I mention it in this guide to the best beaches of Fuerteventura because it’s a great choice for those traveling with children, given the relatively calm waters and complete range of services, as well as for those traveling in winter, since part of the bay is usually sheltered from the wind, allowing even the coldest people to lie in the sun.

At this Fuerteventura beach, you’ll find all the necessary services, and along the waterfront and in the nearby neighborhood, there’s abundance of bars and restaurants for a drink or a full meal.

Caleta de Fuste is also an excellent area to stay as it is located approximately in the middle of the island, but I’ll talk more about this in the dedicated guide on where to stay in Fuerteventura.

Morro Jable

Overall rating: 7/10
Services: Yes
Accessibility: Easy
Type of beach: Sandy and wide
Nearby accommodations: in Morro Jable, such as Hostal Maxorata or the Iberostar Fuerteventura Palace

Well, the beach of Morro Jable is so wide that it couldn’t fit in just one photo.

It stretches for nearly 5 km in the southernmost area of the island of Fuerteventura, on the Jandia Peninsula, and is the largest beach among those attached to an urban center.

Definitely a great beach for those who want to have a lot of free space around them. The beach, which in its center also hosts the large Morro Jable lighthouse, is bordered by a seafront with gardens and a great path for those who want to run or ride a bike, occasionally discovering some original “statue”:

The beach of Morro Jable has services and umbrellas with deckchairs (mostly on the western side towards the urban center), as well as large areas of free beach.

Even in this case, although it is not a beach with unforgettable views, it is worth mentioning for its vastness and for the views provided by the lighthouse with certain light angles.

Ajuy

Overall rating: 8/10
Services: No, but there are some bars in the nearby village
Accessibility: Easy
Type of beach: Black sand and caves
Nearby accommodations: In the village itself, some quiet apartments like Casa Pano.

Beaches of Fuerteventura - Black sand beach of Ajuy
Among the best beaches of Fuerteventura, let’s now look at one that is really interesting: Ajuy Beach, for which I believe the photo above, taken during a cloudy sunset, speaks for itself.

Ajuy is a village that is far from touristy, located on the western coast of Fuerteventura, which has a black sand and pebble beach, where the waves that reach it create a foam effect with an inexplicable sound.

Certainly a great beach for those who want to stay away from overly touristy spots and enjoy some peace in a scenic setting.

If you visit Ajuy Beach, keep in mind that there are no services, so bring what you need, any umbrellas or something to eat, although you can find some bars and restaurants by walking around the nearby village.

Always be careful when swimming. This is a rule that applies to all beaches in Fuerteventura since you are in the middle of the ocean, which should never be underestimated, but extra attention should be paid on the western coast beaches as they are more exposed to waves and the power of elements. Do not get far from the shore.

In addition to relaxing on the beach, you can also take a walk along a path that follows the coast from the beach, leading to a cove where the Cuevas Negras caves are located.

Along the Dunes of Corralejo

Overall rating: 9/10
Services: Only in some sections
Accessibility: Quite easy
Type of beach: Sandy like the desert in front
Nearby accommodations: The closest town is Corralejo

Beaches of Fuerteventura - behind the Dunes of Corralejo
One of the many beaches that develop along the desert coast

In this case, we’re talking about something different from a simple beach in Fuerteventura.

The Dunes of Corralejo, for those who don’t know them yet, consist of a real desert that stretches for several kilometers in the northeastern part of Fuerteventura.

Various beaches are worth a visit here. Most are, of course, sandy like the one in the photo above, but there are also some rocky coastal spots.

In some places (but not many), lifeguards and beach bars are also present. So, be sure to bring water or snacks when you go there.

To reach them, you just need to park along the only main road that runs through the dunes where you feel most inspired (in a spot where you don’t block traffic, of course), and walk towards the sea; in this other article, I talk in more detail about the Corralejo dunes and their beaches!

Majanicho

Overall rating: 8/10
Services: No
Accessibility: Quite easy
Type of beach: Small with sand and pebbles
Nearby accommodations: Pierre & Vacances Village or the affordable Lobster Shack by the bay.

Fuerteventura beaches and where to stay

Majanicho Beach is a tiny beach in Fuerteventura shaped like a bay made of sand and pebbles, which, although it is located on the northern coast of the island, has extremely calm waters, almost still, because it is sheltered by the narrow bay.

On this beach, with a gradually sloping seabed, you probably won’t do much swimming, but it qualifies as one of the best beaches of Fuerteventura because on a sunny day it has incredible colors, it’s very relaxed, and the atmosphere with the village of Majanicho on the sides, which looks like the typical village from “Speedy Gonzales” cartoons, becomes a truly scenic view.

When visiting this beach, bring water and any food you may need, and don’t forget an umbrella if you need one, as there are no services.

Just behind the beach is a dirt road that runs along the entire northern coast, which you can travel with a quad or dune buggy tour, which I recommend.

Alternatively, you can also reach it by car, there is a road that leads directly to Majanicho.
If you particularly like this secluded spot, you can also consider staying there, for example at the Lobster Shack right by the bay or at the Pierre & Vacances Village resort a little further inland.

El Cotillo

Overall rating: 9/10
Services: No
Accessibility: Easy
Type of beaches: One wide and wave-beaten, others sandy and partially rocky, very calm
Nearby accommodations: here is the full list, including the affordable Laif Hotel or the 3-star Cotillo Beach

El Cotillo is a small town at the northwest tip of the island of Fuerteventura that has both peaceful beaches and a large stretch of coast ideal for surfers, which you can also admire from the top of the promontory.
Once you arrive by car at El Cotillo, if you proceed to your left (that is, towards the south), you can reach a large beach by descending the promontory where the ocean shows all its strength.

El Cotillo coast seen from above, in the distance the large wave-beaten beach

I recommend this beach only for surfers and those who know exactly what they are doing. I do not recommend swimming here or near the rocks on the sides: the waves crashing on the coast can reach several meters in height.

However, if you continue about 500 meters towards the north, you will reach a couple of small bay-shaped calm beaches and sheltered from the waves.

Beaches of Fuerteventura - near El Cotillo

After visiting these, don’t stop and continue for another kilometer, even where it seems like there’s nothing left, to find a stretch of coastline that is anything but ordinary!

These beautiful beaches of Fuerteventura are partly sandy and partly surrounded by rocks. Where the rocks form a sort of natural pool, you will find warmer water than elsewhere.

On all these beaches of El Cotillo, you will not have problems even if traveling with children, thanks to the calmer sea; as always, bring water with you for safety. There are some services at the two main bays, although not many, or alternatively, you can return to the town of El Cotillo to buy food or other items.

When I was there, there were no areas with deckchairs and umbrellas.

Playa de Cofete

Overall rating: 7/10
Services: No
Accessibility: Difficult
Type of beach: Sandy and long
Nearby accommodations: None

This guide to the beaches of Fuerteventura could not end without mentioning Playa de Cofete. Located on the Jandia Peninsula, in the south of Fuerteventura, this sandy beach nearly 20 km long extends at the foot of the mountain range of the peninsula, on the opposite side from Morro Jable.

Reaching this beach is no joke. To get to the beach, and likewise to reach elevated points to admire it from above, there are only dirt roads, for which an off-road vehicle is recommended, so be cautious with rental cars because probably the insurances don’t cover this roads.

If in doubt, visit it with an organized tour by quad or dune buggy, which you can find in the center of Morro Jable.

In this sometimes stormy beach, I advise against swimming but recommend it to experienced surfers who want to practice with the mountain range landscape behind them.

Don’t stop here!

Before finishing, I want to emphasize that Fuerteventura beaches are not just these. On this island exploring is highly recommended!
Simply zoom in on the map along the island’s coasts to discover more opportunities, which, if they fit your timing and routes, I suggest you visit, always remembering that (even at the risk of repeating myself) we are in the middle of the ocean, and the power of the sea should never be underestimated!
